Unlike passive content platforms, AI tutors like Khanmigo engage students in dialogue, ask guiding questions, and adjust difficulty based on responses in real time.

Research shows AI tutoring can close the gap compared to traditional classroom instruction, though it has not yet fully replicated the effectiveness of expert one-on-one human tutors. Studies on platforms like Carnegie Learning's MATHia show significant learning gains, particularly for students who engage consistently with AI guidance rather than just seeking answers.

Several AI tutoring tools are free or low cost. Khan Academy's Khanmigo is free for US K-12 students and teachers. Socratic by Google is free. Carnegie Learning and similar platforms typically require school or district licenses. Many free tools cover core subjects adequately for students who cannot access paid tutoring.

AI tutors currently handle math (arithmetic through calculus), reading comprehension, writing feedback, foreign language practice, and science concept explanation most effectively. Logic-based subjects with clear correct answers are better suited to current AI tutoring than open-ended humanities topics that require nuanced judgment and discussion.
